Approach to sustainability at the Terumo Group

Under the corporate mission of “Contributing to society through Healthcare”, the Terumo Group strives to provide a stable supply of high-quality medical equipment and services to patients and medical settings throughout the world, as well as resolve the various challenges facing healthcare.

To achieve this corporate mission, Terumo has established its Five Statements—“Open Management”, “Enhanced Value”, “Safety and Reliability”, “Respect for our Associates”, and “Corporate Citizenship.” These govern the actions and decisions made by all Terumo associates.

Based on the Five Statements, the Terumo Group determines priorities for sustainability that must be put into practice in the course of daily business activities. The Group will strive for balance between realization of a sustainable society and Terumo Group’s sustainable growth by promoting these priorities, while communicating with patients, medical professionals and other stakeholders.

Sustainability Priorities

Under the corporate mission of “Contributing to society through Healthcare”, the Terumo Group aims to balance the realization of sustainable society with sustainable growth of the Terumo Group by striving to use business activities as a means to solve social issues.
In order to make this happen, the Terumo Group determines sustainability priorities to address, and works on specific initiatives within daily business activities.

The Process to Determine Sustainability Priorities

The Terumo Group determines priorities according to the following process.

Step1

Identify potential issues

Referring to sustainability guidelines and standards such as those published by GRI*1 and SASB*2, comprehensively identify which sustainability issues concern the Terumo Group.

Step1

Prioritize

Evaluate how important these issues are for the Terumo Group, in terms of their importance to stakeholders and relevance to our Corporate Mission and other related policies. Select those that are highly important to both parties.

Step1

Determine priorities

Taking into consideration the current status of initiatives within the Terumo group, determine the sustainability priorities from among those that had been selected for their high level of importance. The executive management meeting then deliberates over the priorities that were identified to confirm that they are appropriate.

Sustainability Management

The Corporate Sustainability Department was established in April 2018. Its purpose is to coordinate and promote activities throughout the group. Working together with related departments, committees, and with group companies, the Corporate Sustainability Department sets action policies and priorities related to sustainability, finds ways to disseminate these throughout the group, and promotes specific initiatives. It also interacts with internal and external stakeholders, sharing information and engaging in discussions, in order to understand the expectations society has for the Terumo Group and reflect these in the initiatives.
